Minister Gaspar Vega Won’t Run in OW North Again

It is confirmed. U.D.P. power-broker, financier and three term area representative Gaspar Vega is getting out of politics, or at least that’s what it looks like. The rumors started circulating on Wednesday, and News Five has managed to get hold of a copy of a letter written by Vega, dated March eighth. It’s addressed to U.D.P. Chairman Alberto August and copied to Party Leader Dean Barrow and Secretary-General Pearl Stuart. It states, “I would first like to thank the United Democratic Party for the opportunity given to me to serve as Deputy Party Leader for the past eight years. This opportunity ultimately elevated me to the position of Deputy Prime Minister of this great nation of ours; for which the most gratifying accomplishment was the successful renegotiation of the Petrocaribe agreement for the people of Belize, and for this I will forever be grateful. I take this opportunity also to inform the party that I will not contest the position of Area Representative of Orange Walk North in the next general election. It has been established that the party is taking the position of not having another biennial convention for another four years; because of this position and the fact that I will not be a candidate in the next general election, I am convinced that the proper thing to do is to withdraw my application for Deputy Party Leader in the upcoming biennial convention to be held on March twentieth, 2016. However, I will continue to faithfully serve the United Democratic Party and will do whatever is asked of me in the interest of the betterment of the party. I will also work arduously with my successor to ensure another victory for the great constituency of Orange Walk North. I again want to thank each individual who contributed to my successful political career both internally and externally; and I remain a proud member of our great United Democratic Party.”
