Sixth Form Student in Jail for Robbery

Elroy Hemmans Jr.

A Belize City man has been unable to post bail and is in police custody accused of committing a broad daylight robbery against a bus conductor on Tuesday at the compound of Novelo’s Bus Terminal.  Elroy Hemmans Junior, who is also a part time accountant, was arraigned this morning for robbing Samir Martinez of three hundred dollars.  Hemmans Junior pleaded not guilty and the court prosecutor, Sergeant Claude Pitts, had no objection to bail. He, however, asked for permission to speak saying he can explain what happened.  He claimed that he and his girlfriend were riding in the bus, but when he was short of one dollar to pay for the fares, the conductor insulted him. He ran out of the bus but the conductor and driver set chase and the Strike Team working the area detained him with the money bag. But according to the police, Martinez reported to them that while at the Novelo’s parking lot, he was approached by a man who stoned him with a rock that landed on the back of the head and caused him to fall.  Martinez alleges that his money bag fell to the ground and that is when Hemmans Junior took it. He is due back in Court on September thirteenth, 2016.
