Conflict Resolution Sessions at the Hub

Over the past few weeks, street gangs in the various communities have been engaged in a clean-up campaign in their respective neighborhoods as part of a collaborative effort by the Ministries of Home Affairs and Human Development. Since then, a chef, Reuben Cano who lived in the Antelope Street Extension area was shot dead. Today, there was an interactive session at the Hub Resource Centre for those who might be having some differences. Chairman of the Leadership Intervention Unit, William Dawson told News Five today that interventions like these aim to teach young men how to avoid conflict.

“The Ministry of Home Affairs, along with the Police Department, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Human Development, Tourism and Youth and Sports are providing basic counseling training alternatives to violence for them to be able to cope with situations when they arise and reach out for mediation and intervention without taking the issue on themselves and causing violence within their neighborhoods. So there are several components as you’re aware. They will eventually be asked to do one week in the Mountain Pine Ridge area, where they will do a wilderness training and in that we have teamed up with the University of Belize and the Department of Youth Services and Mr. Kevin Cadle as well and the Belize City Council.”
