Alleged murderer caught in Mexico

Story PictureAnd the man believed to be responsible for the murder of twenty-nine year old Karina Daniels of Corozal Town was caught on the other side of the northern border. And the information released since his capture is quite disturbing. According to a report in the Diario de Quintana Roo, Carlos Keme was detained by Mexican authorities and is reportedly a member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13 gang. The report says that when he was caught, Keme told immigration authorities that his intent was to kill two men he found in bed with his wife, but they escaped. He also allegedly claimed that the devil possessed him and forced him to murder Daniels, who was three months pregnant with his child. When we contacted Corozal Police today, the Officer in Charge, Superintendent Miguel Guzman, told us Keme is still in custody in Mexico because there were some delays with his deportation hearing.

Supt. Miguel Guzman, O.C., Corozal Police Station
“We have been in negotiation with the Mexican authorities and yesterday Mr. Keme was taken before the court where he was in the process of being deported. But he claimed to the judge that he is a Salvadoran National. Subsequent to that information, the judge declined in making the deportation order. Following the investigation, what we did was we obtained a copy of Mr. Keme’s birth certificate as well as his voter’s registration document and this has been handed over to the Mexican authorities.”

“So do you have any idea as yet when he will be handed over to Belize?”

Supt. Miguel Guzman
“We had scheduled for two o’clock today and since we have now handed over the documents, I have my officers at the border and they are still awaiting a decision of the judge from Quintana Roo.”

Delahnie Bain
“Do you know how or when the Mexican authorities found him?”

Supt. Miguel Guzman
“I am not certain but it is between Sunday and Monday, but I am sure that he was taken to court yesterday.”

Delahnie Bain
“There have also been rumours that he has confessed to the crime. Have you heard anything to that effect?”

Supt. Miguel Guzman
“Well, I have heard similar claims from other sources but we have not been able to confirm that here in Belize because he is not in our custody. He is still in Mexican authorities’ custody; probably he may have said something to them.”

Daniels’ body was found nude in some bushes in Orange Walk Town last Friday. Children heading for school made the discovery of the murdered woman.
And in respect to the weekend murder of fifty-nine year old teacher, Javier Castillo, also from Corozal, police told News Five today that all leads are being followed but that no arrests have so far been made. Meanwhile, Belize City police are looking for two suspects in connection with the brutal murder of twenty year old Randy Coye, whose body was retrieved on Monday morning from the Lord Ridge Cemetery. Police believe the motive of the murder was gang-related revenge.
