Accidents on the Northern Highway and Benque Road

Story PictureOn the highways, however, shortly after one this afternoon, three persons were injured in a traffic accident in the vicinity of Benny’s Apartments. The accident involved a Plymouth caravan traveling towards Belize City and an Isuzu rodeo going in the opposite direction. Both vehicles were extensively damaged from the impact of the collision. The rodeo ended up in a ditch a couple yards away. Owner of the caravan, David Dawson says he was surprised by the incoming vehicle.

I give a vehicle pass that was behind me and after I give dah vehicle pass, I turn in here. And after I turn in here I feel the impact of that vehicle over there that hit me.”

“And it dented the van really in. That means this vehicle was coming at high speed. Tell us sir, did you see the person coming?”

David Dawson
“Well, not really because when I look up deh I didn’t see no vehicle so I just turn in and dah afta I reach right in yah—as a matter of fact, you could si di impact of weh ih hit me. It didn’t hit me on the road; it was off the road and I was in no hurry because I know that I’m clear and when I feel after I turn in here slowly, I feel the impact.”

“Did you get any hurt?”

David Dawson
“No, I noh get no hurt.”

Duane Moody
“What about the person that was driving the Rodeo? Was that person alone? Did he or she get hurt?”

David Dawson
“Yeah, she were crying a little bit but I feel that she was mostly frightened.”

Duane Moody
“Any blood or anything like that?”

David Dawson
“No, I noh si no blood. I noh si no blood off her.”

Duane Moody
“Was the woman that was driving alone or…”

David Dawson
“It seems that she had a young man.”

And while that accident was not fatal, another on the Benque Viejo Road on Friday night turned deadly for a San Ignacio resident. Twenty-three year old Ireno Magana was a passenger in a Mitsubishi van traveling towards San Ignacio Town when it lost control and collided into a Police Isuzu D-Max pickup. The van at the time of the incident was being driven by Defido Monroy. And while the police officers and the other passengers of the van received minor injuries, Magana suffered head and body injuries and later succumbed to the injuries.
