Calypso Rose to be Honored at WOMEX

Calypso Rose will be bestowed with the WOMEX 16 Artist Award in October of this year in Santiago De Compostela, Berlin. At age seventy-six, the legendary singer and composer from Trinidad and Tobago has recorded hit calypsos and has been dubbed the Grand Lady of Calypso. For half a century she has been at the forefront of carnival jump-up, reggae, and other rhythms and is an activist that has received numerous awards and titles and won many competitions. According to the Atlantic Connections’ Special Showcase Programme, the key to her musical transformation is a collaborative trio of producer including the well known Ivan Duran of Stone Tree Records, Toronto’s Drew Gonsalves and Manu Chao, who penned most of Calypso Rose’s music. In fact, it was announced today that Duran will be handing over the award to the legendary musician. Calypso Rose first performed at WOMEX back in 2006 and will take the stage once again in October, ten years later, to perform with members of Kobo Town for the final concert of the World Music Event.
