What is Haitian Police Saying about Situation in Haiti?

Chester Williams

Among those in Belize for the regional security meeting is a representative from the National Police of Haiti. As we’ve been reporting, the issue of gang violence in Haiti is volatile and Belize has agreed to send a mission to assist in the intervention being led by Kenya. At least fifty soldiers and coastguards will be fielded for the mission, and police officers are also interested in joining. Deployment has not occurred as yet, but today, when the media caught up with Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, he says that he has been able to dialogue with the Haitian representative and the crimes in Haiti will also come up in the regional security meeting.

“I met with him yesterday; we had a welcome cocktail last night. At that event I took the liberty of speaking to him, but may I also say that the representative from Haiti is also a member of the ACCP, which I am a member of. So I had met him in May of this year in Trinidad and so we are no stranger to each other. But yes, we did discuss the issue in Haiti and what we want to see as a part of this meeting or this conference is to see how as a region, we can assist Haiti through our commission. So that is going to be a part of our discussion as well.”
