O.W. thieves jack safe with thousands in jewellery
An Orange Walk resident is tonight pleading for the public’s assistance following a home invasion that netted intruders more than thirty thousand dollars in jewellery and household items. According to Antoinette Young, sometime between five-thirty and eight-thirty on Friday evening, a thief or thieves used a butcher knife to pry open the kitchen window of her home on Dr. George Street. Once inside, a disc-man, Nokia cell phone, two laptops, a DVD player, VCR, camcorder, and a safe were all stolen. Police would later find the bulk of the items in a field near the Dr. George Estate, but the safe is still missing. According to Young, in addition to documents such as her U.S. passport, land papers, and insurance documents, the box contains much of her jewellery. Tonight, she is appealing to local welders not to assist the thieves in hacking into the safe. The safe is described as a heavy duty fireproof box, beige in colour with black handles and an electronic keypad. Anyone with information that may assist the authorities in their investigation is asked to please call the nearest police station.
