Corozal student wins BTB social studies quiz

Story PictureFor a while it seemed like the contest that would never end, but with a fully loaded DELL computer on the line, there was a reason for the cutthroat competition. The event was the Belize Tourism Board’s second annual Social Studies Quiz…which for the first time included the participation of students from around the country. Tensions ran high as the boys and girls completed elimination rounds and school officials made their queries. But in the end there were only three…and with a final tie-breaker question about volcanoes, it was standard six student Christie Manzanilla from the Corozal district who took top honours.

Janelle Chanona
?I noticed you were being very quiet, were you nervous??

Christie Manzanilla, Winner, BTB Social Studies Quiz
?I was truly nervous.?

Janelle Chanona
?What were you thinking of to give you strength??

Christie Manzanilla
?I was thinking of God, my parents, and all the studying I did.?

Janelle Chanona
?How much studying did you put into this??

Christie Manzanilla
?A lot. I actually gave like fifty percent of my time, dedicating myself to studying and I really want to thank my teachers, Mr. Vellos and Ms. Clara, my parents, my classmates and all those who helped me in this competition.?

Janelle Chanona
?So you think you will be remembering these facts for a couple more weeks you think??

Christie Manzanilla
?Yeah.? (Chuckles)

In addition to Christie’s computer, the prizes also include a thousand dollars in cash and a plaque for her school, St. Francis Xavier Primary in Corozal. Running a close second to Manzanilla was Zair Pott of Guinea Grass Pentecostal Primary in the Orange Walk District, while third place was claimed by Deidra Mahler of Corozal’s St. Paul’s Anglican Primary.
