6 year old Guatemalan student is kidnapped in Benque

Benque Police are tonight investigating a report of the kidnapping of a six year old Guatemalan girl in Belize. Germayoni Asucena Cancinos Letran commutes daily from her home in Melchor De Mencos, Guatemala to attend school at the Adventist Primary School in Hills of Promise in Benque Viejo Del Carmen. But today, her father, who was given sole custody of Germayoni by the Guatemalan courts, made the report to the Benque Police after he got word that a cousin of his ex-wife had taken the six year old without his permission. That cousin has been arrested and questioned by Guatemalan authorities, but the whereabouts of Germayoni remain unknown. All indications are that the child is with the mother. Officer Commanding Benque Viejo Police Station, Assistant Superintendent Dinsdale Thompson spoke of the investigation.

“Our investigation reveal at this present moment that the mother of the child and the father have a dispute over the child in Guatemala. Both of them are Guatemalans along with the child who is Guatemalan as well; living in Guatemala. The child is only attending school here in Belize every morning bus coming from Guatemala bringing students to Belize. The child is six years old and it is reported that she was taken away by her mom’s cousin this morning sometime around eight-thirty a.m. and taken to a location which we at this moment do not know. We are following all angles relating to that. However, what we have learnt when we visited our Guatemalan counterparts…that the young lady who came to the school in Benque Viejo and taken the child, has been taken into Guatemalan custody. They also revealed that the alleged abductor, the Guatemalan authority does not intend to place any charges upon her because the abduction of the child was not committed in Guatemala, but was committed in Belize. She is in agreement or confessed that yes, she went to the school and took the child, but at this moment, we have not gotten further information from them where she took the child.”

Information as well as a photo of Cancinos Letran has been sent to all police formations countrywide should in fact the child is being hidden in Belize. ASP Thompson says that they are currently reviewing surveillance footage to verify if in fact Cancinos Letran was taken back to Guatemala.
