G.O.B.: buses will be ready for students on Monday
Across the country today, teachers were hard at work getting their classrooms ready for the second term of the school year. But while classes are scheduled to resume on Monday and more than a few parents are counting down to things getting back to “normal”, tonight there are concerns that the country’s youngest citizens and their teachers will be the ones taking the brunt of the chaos in Belize’s bus industry. Two weeks after the Novelo’s receivership folded, tonight there is no permanent resolution in sight and regular commuters tell News Five of a “ketch and kill system” that has meant fewer runs and long delays at terminals around the country.
Today, the Transport Board and Department of Transportation issued separate press releases, both asserting that contingency plans have been expanded to ensure a smooth flow of passengers. We understand additional service providers will be making extra runs on the Western and Northern highways and the Ministry of Works, Transport, and Communication says buses will be on standby in case they are needed.
Officials tell News Five that government representatives continue to negotiate for a practical and comprehensive national transportation plan to get the bus industry running on all cylinders.
