Tourism police start toy drive for city kids

Story PictureThe Salvation Army and the Rotary Club are just two organisations rounding up toys for tots this Christmas. This morning, six members of the Belize Tourism Unit in Belize City stopped by our studios to inform us that since October, they’ve been spending their days off collecting books and toys to donate to needy children in the old capital. But like the Rotary Club and the Salvation Army, the officers have been having a hard time meeting their goals. Tonight they are encouraging local businesses to give generously to their cause.

Sharlett Andrews, Tourism Police
?If you go on Albert Street, you can see how many kids are out there begging, you know, they are looking for food, any lee stuff that they can get to play with and so. And I believe you know, at least you should have a heart and help these kids.?

?We?ve already chosen areas, like St. Martin?s De Porres Area, some kids from Faber?s Road, I live in the Rocky Road area, I know of some kids that will be needing these stuff. I asked the other colleagues if they can get kids from their area too because you know a lot of poor kids live in Belize, they are not hard to find.?

Kendra Griffith
?How many children are you all aiming to help??

Sharlett Andrews
?Well I was aiming to help at least a hundred kids, but so far we are not sure if we are going to reach that point. We already got some stuff, but I?m looking to get more later on and then I can say more or less if we are going to reach that hundred mark.?

If you would like to donate gifts to children through the Tourism Police Unit, please contact Lita Krohn at the House of Culture or officer Sharlett Andrews at 605-1368. According to Andrews, they hope to distribute the presents this Friday.
