Incumbent mayor ousted in U.D.P. Benque convention
There has been a political upset in the west following municipal conventions by the United Democratic Party in Benque Viejo. Incumbent Mayor Said “Badi” Guerra will not represent the town in March following a blistering loss on Sunday to the former mayor Marconi Sosa. According to the U.D.P. secretariat, Sosa garnered five hundred and fifty-eight votes, a whopping three hundred and ninety-eight more than Guerra, who pulled in only one hundred and sixty. The rest of the slate is comprised of Nicholas Ruiz, Jorge Iglesias, Elmer Guerra, Aracely Escalante, Adrian Guerra and Rosalina Aldana. Said “Badi” Guerra entered Belizean politics as a councillor after winning a by-election in March 2002 following the death of his father Pedro Guerra Mena in December 2001. He was later elected mayor in the 2003 municipal elections, after he replaced Sosa as the U.D.P. candidate.
