Police: arrest made in David Melendez shooting
On Monday we aired the story of an eight year old boy who was knockdown in Ladyville by a garbage truck. In that report, the boy’s father, David Melendez not only complained about the police investigation into his son’s case, but he also took issue with the authorities concerning his own case that left him with only one eye. Today, News Five received a phone call from one of the investigators into that incident who informed us that that case is still open. According to the authorities, they have been able to ascertain that two brothers opened fire on Melendez following a Christmas party at his home in Trinidad Farm. Police have identified Hilberto and Angel Perez as the men who went to the house with the purpose to kill Melendez following a family dispute. They have since arrested Hilberto and charged him with attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm in connection with the shooting and he is presently behind bars in Hattieville prison awaiting trial. Meanwhile, authorities have been unable to capture Angel Perez, who is believed to have left the county, but police say they have not given up the search. As for Melendez’s son, Darwin, he continues to recuperate from his injuries. The accident remains under investigation, but so far no one has been charged.
