Shooting at Fisheries Department ends in arrests
A shooting incident on Newtown Barracks over the weekend has resulted in the arrest of two Belize City men. According to police reports, around two on Saturday morning armed men entered the compound of the Fisheries Department and ambushed the lone security guard. As they were in the process of bounding the guard with duct tape, another employee who was sleeping in one of the offices inside the building heard a commotion and opened the door. The gunman pointed the weapon at him and indicated that he was to come outside; instead the frightened man slammed the door and ran away. A shot was fired in his direction, but the bullet hit the door. The intruders then attempted to leave the property, but a police patrol in the area was able to detain one of the suspects and within hours authorities had also nabbed his accomplice. We understand that during their investigations police recovered a nine millimetre handgun and six rounds of ammunition. Tonight, twenty-one year old Everal Gray of Faber’s Road and twenty-seven George Young of Raccoon Street have been charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, damage to property, and conspiracy to commit burglary. Gray has also been additionally charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
