Bliss to host Belize School of Music Christmas show
In December the curtain goes up at the Bliss Centre for the Performing Arts and this Saturday, the Belize School of Music takes centre stage with its annual Christmas concert. But the event is not just for parents and family of the students, the public at large is invited to come out and enjoy the sounds of the holidays. This morning News Five spoke with director of the music school, Gina Scott.
Gina Scott, Director, Belize School of Music
?We have some samples of work that was done during the term, because we are a school, so we run with the school year. But also, we have some items that were specially prepared for the Christmas season. We have a Botswanan carol, we have a Puerto Rican carol, we have some Paranda music. We have some music that is being played by four persons on two pianos, average age nine years old. And we also have some students from Benque coming in to perform along with us. These are students that Katherine DeRenzis teaches and they will be performing on the programme for the first time.?
?The school came about, started to grow out of a need, requests from people in the community for music classes, and as requests came we tried to accommodate them. So we started off giving piano lessons, it?s still our largest programme and I do believe we are the school that has the most piano students.?
?A lot of these performances are arranged so the students get the experience. But also at this point we are at the stage where we think it?s of a quality that it is worth sharing.?
The Christmas concert begins at six-thirty on Saturday at the Bliss. In addition to the music presentation, certificates will be awarded to the students who successfully completed the C.X.C. music exams and A.B.R.S.M. music theory exams. If you are interested in enrolling your children in a music class in January, Scott says there are still vacancies in the guitar, flute, and recorder programmes, as well as the Garifuna drum classes. The Belize School of Music is located on Palmdale Street in Buttonwood Bay.
