Charges on the Way for Former Health Administrator Nasley Somerville

Nasley Sommerville

The Southern Regional Hospital and Dangriga Polyclinic are being run by middle managers after two administrators have been accused of misappropriation of funds under their control. Today, News Five was at the facility, and found out that hospital administrator Nasley Sommerville has been suspended for more than nine months, while the hospital has been left in the care of the Chief of Staff and the Matron. All financial matters, we are told, are handled by an administrative assistant. And since last week, it is the Dangriga Polyclinic which is without an administrator. Harry Sabal was suspended after another audit turned up financial irregularities. The facility services most of the south of Belize, and we are told that it has been a challenge for middle managers to just keep it operational. The Police haven’t been brought in to look at Harry Sabal, but they have been looking at Nasley Sommerville for months. Today Southern Zone Commander Superintendent Ralph Moody told us that criminal charges could be levied very soon.

“What I can say is that we received the file on Tuesday giving us directive to comply with some directive from the D.P.P.’s office. Take statements from personnel within the banking institution. I already handed over the file to the investigator and gave him directive that I need the file by Tuesday of next week. By mid-next week, we will return that file back to the D.P.P. office for her to peruse. That is the latest with that file. There is no directive to arrest and charge, but there is directive to further investigate into the matter.”

The administrator of the Punta Gorda primary care facility has also been suspended for financial irregularities. News Five is reliably informed that the audit team is heading to Corozal next, where allegations of corruption at the hospital are rampant.
