PM signs $67.5Million agreement with E.U. for poverty alleviation

Dean Barrow

A multimillion dollar agreement has been signed between the Government of Belize and the European Union for poverty alleviation in rural Belize.  On Friday in Washington, Prime Minister Dean Barrow and the E.U.’s Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs were both signatories to a sixty-seven and a half million dollar National Indicative Program.  The six-year initiative is set to conclude in 2020 and is being funded under the European Development Fund Eleven.  As a result Belizeans will benefit from health and energy.  The latter is geared towards providing energy and supporting services in rural areas of the country.  Meanwhile, the health program is designed for improving the organization and management of health services and the development of disaster resilient health infrastructure.

I hope the E.U. has checks and balances to ascertain how this money is spent. If it is provided directly to Barrow and his Junta, this will be money wasted to further corruption. If E.U. provides it to private institutions for distribution, or set up its own distribution system, it will have great results in alleviating poverty. Anything government-led program will be a grotesque joke played on Belizeans.

Excuse me?? Where is the money to defend our borders??? COME ON…This is just fuel for the continuing vicious cycle we are having. This pays rice and beans for the poor for a few weeks, and then we’re back down again.
