Chico Ramos sends positive message through music

Story PictureThe artist so many refer to simply as “Chico” has released another new recording. True to many of his other compositions, Chico Ramos is using music to tackle social issues and promote positive activities, and attitudes. But as News Five’s Janelle Chanona reports, because music is his business, he also takes the issue of piracy very seriously.

Janelle Chanona, Reporting
His music has been a staple of the Belizean music scene for more than a decade and this month, Herman ?Chico? Ramos is serving up another album of recent recordings…and old favourites.

In ?Sports?, Ramos deals with Belizean reality, taking on issues such as obesity and crime.

?We show the kids same time fu do sports, it very healthy you know and with all these obese things, you know maybe you might get lucky and hit the big time by maybe be a great basketballer or footballer or something like that.?

?With that neighbourhood watch, we like we de campaign fu keep the neighbourhood safe, and so the lyrics da all about keeping the neighbourhood safe. Love yuh neighbour, say hi to yuh neighbours, watch yuh neighbour?s back when they no home and thing like that.?

Today, Ramos continues to play a key role in the development of Punta Rock, promoting ?Griga Youths.? But the veteran admits that the technology of today is cramping his moves.

Chico Ramos
?Just two weeks ago, you have some people right in our back, right in our neighbourhood selling our music for five dollars. Me, Titiman, Reckless and Lloyd confiscate about a hundred and fifty CDs right from the market in Dangriga. It?s very hard. But like you said, I have am in this thing for a long time and I cannot give up. Maybe sometimes, just somewhere, something might come up and we could get back to the level that we used to be.?

?Me Supa G, Reckless, Lloyd, Titiman, Elsworth, Mohobub, we are together and we are very close, we are closer than before and I want our country to know that we are very together.?

?Because the bootleggers are selling our CD for cheap, the wholesale price for this CD countrywide is fifteen dollars and twenty dollars retail. So no one should buy this CD above that price.?

“Sports” was recorded at Wafamilia Studios and produced by Cedar Street Records in Dangriga.
