Musa Says P.U.P. Supports Call for 13th Senator
The appointment of a thirteenth senator to represent the N.G.O. community remains an unfulfilled promise. Former Executive Director of SATIIM, Greg Ch’oc, was selected by the N.G.O.s, but his appointment was shelved despite the passage of a law allowing for a thirteenth senator. Earlier this month, the social partners in the senator wrote Prime Minister Barrow about the delay in appointing the thirteenth senator. The letter was signed by Senators Mark Lizarraga, Ray Davis and Father Noel Leslie. Today, former prime minister Said Musa says that the P.U.P. is supporting the senators’ call for a thirteenth senator.
Said Musa, Former Prime Minister
“We are very much committed to that. In fact, if you could recall, I was the one who took this matter to court to get the court to order the prime minister to carry out his, not only his commitment, his promise to the Belizean people, but also the fact that the law was passed, actually carried through the house and the senate amendment of the constitution for the thirteenth senator. The only matter remaining is for the prime minister to actually sign a statutory instrument to bring that law into effect and he has, well, changed his mind he said. But really it’s a very serious matter, in fact it goes to the very heart of the democracy that we need to have checks and balances in the governance of your country and our People’s United Party is totally committed to that. And yes, so we will be supporting the N.G.O.s in calling for this matter and indeed if it’s not done during this U.D.P. administration, I believe under the leadership of the honorable Francis Fonseca it will get done.”
