Roger Anthony & Kendis Flowers Arraigned for Shooting at Meighan’s Residence

Thirty-seven-year-old Roger Anthony and twenty-three-year-old Kendis Flowers were arraigned this morning in the courtroom of Magistrate Herbert Panton on a battery of firearms-related offences. The charges stem from a shooting incident on Sunday night in Belize City. Anthony, the reputed boss of the Ghost Town Crips, was transported from the Queen Street Precinct to magistrates’ court in a pair of crutches. According to his common law wife, who spoke off-record, Anthony fractured a bone beneath the heel of his foot sometime after the incident. Shortly after ten p.m. on Sunday, Shelly Meighan, the mother of siblings Tyrone, Shaquille and Ellis Junior, all with alleged ties to the same gang, reported hearing what appeared to be a barrage of gunshots outside of her Banak Street residence. She would soon after realize that those shots had been fired at her bungalow. While no one was injured during the shooting, a glass louver was reportedly damaged. Police, in a release issued to the media on Monday, stated that quick response led to the detention of Anthony not far from where the gunfire erupted. In his possession was a nine millimeter handgun. Police were also able to retrieve four expended shells from the scene. Anthony’s common-law wife however, refutes the official report that he was nabbed in the immediate vicinity. According to her, he was detained near the corners of Zericote and Vernon streets, several blocks away from the Meighan residence. In court this morning, both men were charged for the crimes of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault and Damage to Property. The arraignment of Anthony comes two weeks after he publicly repudiated his affiliation to the Mayflower Street gang, in the presence of GSU Commander Mark Flowers.

Anthony has been closely linked to its leadership for over two decades. The family of Flowers, who was picked up on Monday by personnel from the GSU, refutes the allegation that he was involved in the shooting. Late this evening, Sharmaine Stuart told News Five that her son was in front of their yard socializing with friends at the time of the shooting.

“I was in bed and I heard noise outside and they said shots were bursting. Well I come outside and I saw my son in the front of the yard standing, drinking. So I heard that dehn gone shot up dah the Meighan’s dehn house; next thing when I heard that it is Kendis Flowers and Roger Anthony. How could Kendis Flowers go and shot up dah the Meighan’s house when Kendis Flowers was right in front of the yard drinking with my brother and some friends of my brother, one of my cousins; they were all drinking in the front of the yard. My cousin lives across the street. She tell me say when she heard the shot, she peep through the window and she see Kendis them right in front of the yard. How could he have anything to do with any shooting if he was in front of the yard? And now I am hearing Miss Shelley Meighan saying that my son is the one who was there too. She said her son noh even come on Mayflower Street and that is a lie. Her son, one of them, sleeps on Mayflower Street; one of them sleeps on Mayflower Street every night. And the next one come every day around here, so she is telling lies. I don’t know why she is telling lie and why she wants my son to go to jail for something that he is not involved in.”

“Well I have no idea what’s going on with them. I can’t give account of that. But I know that my son is innocent to this shooting and I noh see why they would want to put him in jail for something that he is not involved in.”

“He was arraigned this morning on a number of charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault. To you knowledge was he represented by an attorney or was there someone out there who spoke on his behalf?”

“No, not that I know. I don’t know. And a next thing weh I understand why they are saying that Kendis was involved in this shooting. Her son said why ih come with ih ring on mek dehn know dah he. My son ring is not here; my son had never had his ring on. Sunday night, my son bring his ring with his father from about two to three weeks ago. So that is the only reason why dehn say some ring. Kendis don’t have his ring. And he wasn’t even there so how could he be involved in something that he is here…How could he be in two places at the same time? That’s what I want to know. Why is she telling these lies and Ellis telling these lies?”

“Is there anyone else who could attest to the whereabouts of your son on Sunday night?”

“Yes, he has a lot of witness and I think the police is the next thing. They need to get and investigate properly before they charge people for things that they are not willing to do. They need to investigate properly because they just come and charge people as somebody come and say somebody shoot somebody and it is not fair. People go dah jail for something they don’t do. And we need to have a better justice system in Belize.”

“Is there anything else you would want to tell us with regards to what is taking place in this neighborhood and maybe the involvement of your son or maybe the allegations being made against your son?”

“Well I have no idea what’s going on with the guys them; I have no idea. I can’t tell you anything about that, but I know that it is not right for them to charge my son for something that he is not involved in.”

“Did you get a chance to speak with him before he was arraigned and then remanded to Hattieville Prison this morning?”

“No, I didn’t go to the court this morning. he was at his job site, because he work with CISCO Constructions, and they went there yesterday and they take him. The GSU come here so many times yesterday to look for my son. Mister Mark Flowers called my son on his phone and tell him. he said he was going to fix his car and then he was going in. I don’t know which branch of police went and picked him up at the work site.”

“No, by the hospital where the CISCO Construction is doing their job right there. And another thing, my son is not no saint. I’m not saying that my son is a saint, but this time, he is not involved in any shooting and Shelley Meighan needs to get her stats, stop di cover for her son dehn because she knows what’s going on with her kids dehn and she cover it up. She like the paint like her son is the best and they are not the best. They are not the best because her sons do a lot of stuff.”
The Meighan family contends that their residence has been targeted twice in the past by Anthony.
