Husband kills wife, then attempts suicide
Residents of Cayo’s twin towns are still in shock tonight following a deadly shooting incident that has claimed the life of a young mother. It appears to be a case of murder followed by attempted suicide. Neighbours tell News Five that around seven on Monday night two gunshots shattered the silence, then came a scream. There was nothing heard for about a minute and then came another gunshot. As people made their way to the small house at the corner of La Loma Luz Boulevard and Aguada Street in Santa Elena, a terrible sight greeted them: a small boy on a bicycle screaming for someone to help his mother; another child, just five years old, suffering from gunshot wounds to his leg; a woman bleeding from her stomach on the floor of the house; and on the cement walkway outside the house lay a man with serious wounds to his head. The woman, thirty-two year old Delia Cruz, was rushed to La Loma Luz hospital but she died within minutes. Her five-year-old son Jordan remains admitted to ward. His father, fifty-two year old Juan Dorado, has been transferred to the K.H.M.H. where he is listed in critical condition. Police tell News Five that prior to the shooting, the couple were in a heated argument during which Dorado pulled out a pump action twelve gauge shotgun and shot his common-law wife in the stomach. Pellets from the cartridge hit little Jordan who was standing near his mom. It is believed that shortly after, Dorado walked outside where he shot himself. Tonight neighbours tell News Five that the couple were new to the area, having only rented the house two weeks ago. But in that short time, voices raised in anger were regularly heard coming from the residence. Juan Dorado had served as a manager with Nova Shrimp farm in Ladyville for some time before moving west. He had also recently been awarded an Executive Masters in Business Administration by U.B. and the University of the West Indies.
