Sport Complex case against government dismissed

A major court case against the government of Belize came to an end today. And it was a win for the government, which won’t need to fork out any payments from its coffers. Supreme Court Justice Oswell Legall dismissed a two point five million dollar claim for breach of contract brought by Bella Vista Development Company Limited and Lopez Equipment Limited. Two months prior to the 2008 general elections, the companies owned by Javier Berbey and Wilhelm Lopez signed contracts for the construction of the Belize Sports Center which was going to be placed at the Marion Jones Sports Complex on Princess Margaret Drive. Right after assuming office, on March eleventh, the Barrow administration terminated the contract. The companies claimed in court that they would have netted two point five million dollars in profit from a sixteen million dollars contract. Another countersuit by the government against the companies for repayment of alleged advanced payments was also dismissed by Justice Legall. Attorney Godfrey Smith represented the claimants and Philip Palacio represented the government. And while that is over, athletes have nothing to celebrate as the Marion Jones Sports Complex is still in a mess.
