P.U.P. Selects Richard Harrison to Run in Cayo North Bye-election

There will be a bye-election in Cayo North, and it is set for January fifth, five weeks from today. The odds are stacked against the P.U.P., who have had very little time to find a candidate, and will have less time to mount a credible campaign…but campaign they will. There were two candidates for the post – businessman Richard Harrison and attorney Michel Chebat, and today the Opposition introduced the man who will be their candidate in Cayo North.

“We have held extensive discussions with the members of the P.U.P. Cayo North Executive; we’ve also been meeting with the residents of Cayo North and the overwhelming message coming from both the executive and the residents is that the best candidate moving forward was Mister Richard Harrison. That message was brought to the National Executive Meeting this morning by myself and it was ratified by the National Executive that Mister Harrison be endorsed as the P.U.P. standard bearer for Cayo North.”

“We want to of course thank Mister Michel Chebat; he essentially withdrew his candidacy. He felt that it was in the best interest of the party to do so. We need to have a unified strong aggressive intensive campaign over the next five weeks in Cayo North. As a party, all of us felt that it was not in our interest to hold a convention at this time. And so that was the basis on which the decision was made and we strongly feel that Mister Richard Harrison represents the best opportunity for the party to win the bye-election in Cayo North on January fifth, 2015.”

“This makes me very proud to be a part of the People’s United Party because we are listening to the people and we are abiding by the rules of our party which is what our constituents expect us to do. I just want to say hello to all my people of Cayo North. I have been on the ground for only a week and a half now, but I am from there. I was born there, I grew up there, I invest there; I have a lot of friends, I have fun there. It is a beautiful place and it is a proud moment for me to get this opportunity, although I would have hoped for a convention. That’s what I was calling for from the beginning. A clean and fair convention, but certain things have changed. Urgency has been created outside of the control of our party and we have to agree with the wider judgment of all our party.”
