P.M. Barrow Says G.O.B. is Clear on Employment of B.M.L. Workers

What’s going on with Mayor Darrell Bradley? There’ve been reports that he’s been threatening resignation and all sorts of calamitous political stuff. Then there’ve been reports of him packing up his office and retreating to his law firm. We’ve been unable to confirm any of that, but we do know there is serious discontent in City Hall and the Mayor is not happy. One reason is his administrator, Candice Burke. News Five is reliably informed that Bradley wanted her gone, but he was outvoted. And the other matter, of course, is the one hundred and seventy workers who will come home to roost in January. We hear he’s washed his hands of that one, and G.O.B. has had to be working out the nitty gritty details with City Hall sans the Mayor’s intervention. Today, we asked PM Barrow about it.

“I don’t think he’s expressed any discontent. He’s said he has his reservations that taking on that size, that number of workers will pose some challenges for the Council and I can’t disagree with that. But government is very clear. People’s jobs must be preserved.”

“I know that your office has had to intervene. Your office has had to take over the transition because the Mayor apparently doesn’t like the terms…”

Dean Barrow

“No…no. We were working with two councillors but they operated under the Mayor’s direction. The two Councillors went to Houston to try to identify equipment that government is prepared to purchase for the city and their trip was approved and paid for by the Mayor.”

BML’s contract comes to an end in mid-January, we are told, and insiders tell us it is more likely that the sanitation company’s contract will be renewed in some form or fashion.
