Midnight Murder in Valley of Peace: Donatilo Canales Fatally Shot
A well known resident was murdered in the Valley of Peace area, Cayo, just after midnight on Saturday. The wife of Donatilo Canales and a neighbor found him dead in a bushy area after gun shots were heard. Following the murder, the Canales family moved out of the village in fear of their lives since there is speculation that the suspect is a police officer. Today, we found the community reeling at the murder over which there are more questions than answers. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A succession of gunshots, a barrage of as many as four, nine millimeter rounds, broke the nocturnal silence in Valley of Peace on Saturday. Sometime shortly after midnight, fifty-four-year-old Donatilo Canales reportedly heard his dogs barking in the darkness aft of his wooden bungalow. He got out of bed and decided to investigate the ruckus. Moments later, the shooting began.

“It was around midnight when I heard the gunshots. I was lying down and a few moments later the wife of the deceased came to visit me. She told me that he had gone out when he heard the dog bark but did not return. So she went out to look for him. She yelled his name but he did not answer. She then came to look for me. We went to look for him with our flashlights. That was when we found him dead.”
The area behind Canales’ yard is densely covered in vegetation and it would take the pair several minutes before happening upon the lifeless body of the laborer. Canales’ wife, Margarita, we are told, has since vacated the premises out of fear for her life. Her husband’s killer remains at large.

“Who killed him? Who knows? We don’t know who killed him. What we know is that he had five gunshot wounds.”
It is apparent that Canales was lured out of his home and done away with violently, the motive unknown. According to Belmopan Police, an investigation into the homicide is yet to bear fruit. The overnight murder of Donatilo Canales has shaken up the community; many, including his family and friends, are tonight overwhelmed with more questions than answers. The drug users are unhappy and on the streets at midnight molesting in the community. It is likely that the lady in the news is in partnership with the deceased.
