5-year-old dies in Cayo road knockdown

A boy has died after being hit by a van on the Western Highway just outside San Ignacio Wednesday morning. Five-year-old Dixon Maroquin Gonzales, a Guatemalan from Melchor de Mencos, suffered severe head and body injuries and was rushed to the San Ignacio hospital and then transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial, but he passed away around ten pm. The driver of a white Toyota van, John Paul Hales of Windy Hill Resort, told police the child suddenly attempted to cross the highway near Habet’s Block Factory and he could not avoid hitting him. According to police, the Director of Public Prosecutions is being consulted to determine if charges should be filed against Hales.
