Belize Bank Gives Back this Christmas

Mercy Kitchen is a non-profit organization in the Ministry of Sisters of Mercy. The organization, which is located adjacent to Channel Five on Mercy Lane, provides breakfast and lunch as well as clothing to the elderly, poor and homeless; they also deliver supplies to homebound elderly residents across the city. But today, twelve needy families and forty others were treated to food hampers and care packages courtesy of Belize Bank Limited. It is just another initiative of the bank and its staff to give back to the community, especially during the Christmas season.

“This is the second year that we’ve taken on this project with them and the kitchen itself identified twelve families in need of help during the holidays and we will be providing a food hamper to each one of those families today. This morning we have staff from the Belize Bank helping to package the hampers and then this afternoon, we are actually going out with the team from the Mercy Kitchen to actually make the delivery of the hampers. Additionally, we are also providing food assistance for forty elderlies who would normally come to the Kitchen for food and since they are going to be closed, we are actually going to be doing packages for them for the holidays.”

“About two years ago we decided to go out of the box; we prepare meals for elderly, poor and homeless, but this time we decided to select twelve families that are in need. I partnered with a lovely lady from St. Martin’s De Porres; she identified the families for me and I visited with them. Also Miss Elvira Cabb from the Department of Human Services, she identified families for me and I visited with them as well.”

“The food hampers are a little bit more elaborate; they have all the basic necessities for a Christmas dinner. The care packages have a little bit more of the basic stuff: sausage, cheese, coffee…that type of thing. Last year Miss Perdomo approached us and asked us if we would be interested in actually doing food hampers for families and we totally agreed with her idea and this year again we decided to partner and the idea is that this is a long-term commitment, as it is with most of our other projects and it was made possible through the partnership of the Belize Bank and the Belize Bank International. And then of course it is our staff that actually volunteers their time to put the hampers together and also to make the deliveries.”
