Body Found in Belize City

In Belize City, just after midday today, police visited a house on Eve Street in the vicinity of the Ice Cream Shoppe. In the upper flat of the concrete and wooden structure, the decomposing body of Walter Humberto Melendez was discovered face up on his bed. The Guatemalan construction worker had been living alone and was last seen alive on the twenty-fourth by the tenants living in the lower flat of the two story house. According to them, they went to visit with family members and friends outside the city for the Christmas Holidays and on their return today, they were greeted by a foul stench coming from the upper flat into the house. The police were immediately notified. The front door was forced open by the authorities who made the gruesome discovery of Melendez’s body in an advanced state of decomposition. Up to this afternoon, the body remained enclosed in a yellow bag near the entrance to the upper flat, while police made contact with the Guatemalan Embassy on the matter. Police say that they do not suspect foul play as they were no signs of forced entry nor is there any evidence to suggest that Melendez was murdered.

Juan Daniel Young Menjivar

Meanwhile, in the south, police continue to investigate the sudden death of a twenty-year old resident of Independence. Juan Daniel Young Menjivar’s body was found last Tuesday morning between miles forty-two and forty-three on the Southern Highway near the Monkey River Junction with multiple injuries to the head and upper body. A post mortem exam has certified the cause of death as “severe head injury as a consequence of skull fracture and massive force injury to the skull.” But was Menjivar a victim of a hit and run or a homicide?  The investigation, although it was tagged as a sudden death, remains open because Menjivar was last seen walking on the Southern Highway in Bella Vista Village with another man and both were reportedly drunk. C.E.O. in the Ministry of National Security, George Lovell, recently spoke on the incident.

“With that recent body that was found on the Southern Highway between Bella Vista and Independence because while from the looks of it, it appeared to be a hit and run or a vehicular road accident, according to the doctors there have been signs that are consistent with chop wounds. So we need to look at that to see precisely where that is.”

Twenty-six year old Gever Monroy, who was last seen in the company of Menjivar, was initially detained pending investigation, but has now been released.
