Skylar doing well, mom thanks public

Story PictureMeanwhile, tonight, another accident victim continues her long walk to recovery from injuries inflicted by a hit and run driver. On July third, seven-year-old Skylar Sanchez suffered severe head and body injuries when she was struck from behind by a pick-up truck on the Western Highway, near Hattieville Village. For three weeks, the brave little girl fought against the odds to stay alive. Feeling helpless, but never giving up hope, the child’s mother, Floreth Requeña turned to the public for help. With financial assistance from the public and staff of the Atlantic Bank, in mid-August, Skylar was flown to a hospital in Merida for medical treatment. Last week, Skylar returned to her home in Hattieville and though her abilities are still limited, the little girl has made tremendous progress. Today, her family told News Five that they plan to return to Mexico on the sixth of September, but are grateful to everyone who helped in their hour of need.

“I feel good, I feel like, how you seh, I feel my heart full with joy…cause lot of people mi expect the worse and I neva mi di expect that. And people woulda say this thing dah luck, but dah no luck, dah no miracle, dah God work, dah God work.”

“What’s next for Skylar? What does the future look like? What will she have to continue doing?”

Floreth Requeña
“Well, she just have to continue work on her physical and well you know part of her brain dead, so the rest of her brain with the physical exercise, that will help her work part of it. With the language speech, we gone dah Merida to do the language speech, that can’t happen there, they say dah Houston it could happen, but the financial fu reach deh, and they done no want give we the visa, we can’t reach deh, so she just wah have to learn to talk. She is know how fu talk, no get me wrong, but she can’t talk like the rest of kids talk, she talk like wah baby sometimes and like in and out she woulda call me “Miss”, like she no get back her full memory either. But I noh expect that to come overnight, just gradually I believe that she wah come ’round.”

The driver of the vehicle who knocked down Skylar has yet to turn himself into police. In addition to the folks at the Atlantic Bank, Skylar’s family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, and the general public for their kind contributions especially Mariani Cadle, Ana Cardona, and Marla Myers. If you would like to help Skylar Sanchez, please contact the family at 205-6049.
