Three injured in traffic mishaps
Three people remain hospitalised at the K.H.M.H. tonight, the victims of traffic accidents in Belize City over the weekend. The first incident occurred around ten-thirty on Saturday night in which a pedestrian on Mahogany Street was knocked down by a vehicle that did not stop to render assistance. According to forty-two year old Leonal Montoya, he was walking toward Central American Boulevard when he was struck from behind. Montoya sustained severe head and body injuries and remains at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. So far all police know is that the vehicle in question was a black car and they are asking any eyewitnesses to please call in to the nearest station with more details of the vehicle or a description of its driver.
Within a half an hour, authorities were at another accident scene, this time on the Northern Highway. Police reports indicate that around eleven on Saturday night, thirty-three year old Kerion Vasquez was driving his white Isuzu pickup when it rear-ended a yellow Mercedes Benz near mile two. The impact sent the Benz into a spin which ended when the vehicle landed on top of the highway divider. As a result of the collision, thirty-four year old Eudel Bennett and his passenger Inesia Pop suffered head and body injuries and were rushed to the emergency room by ambulance. Following their investigations, police have since arrested and charged Vasquez with the crimes of driving without due care and attention, negligent grievous harm, negligent harm, and operating a motor vehicle with alcohol blood content above the prescribed limit. Vasquez appeared in Belize City Magistrate’s Court today, pleaded not guilty, and was released on bail of one thousand dollars. He will reappear on October eleventh.
