Mora Addresses S.S.B.’s Rejection of Floyd Neal as Union Director

Floyd Neal

One issue that the N.T.U.C.B. is addressing is the rejection of Floyd Neal’s nomination as a union director on the Social Security Board.  The N.T.U.C.B. believes that Neal can recuse himself when the S.S.B. discusses the Collective Bargaining Agreement, to avoid any semblance of conflict of interest since Neal is the Secretary General of the Christian Workers Union. Today, we asked the new president developments on this issue.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“Today, we are having a meeting, an emergency meeting for the general council. In this meeting, we are planning to basically strategize and go forward basis. Our position remains the same. We believe he should be appointed and we don’t see any issues. We realize that at certain point in time there may be conflict of interests, but not just Floyd Neal, a number of other members. A quick example, when you have other people who are sitting on other boards and other companies and these are the companies that are being considered for loans from the S.S.B. loan investment portfolio, and they sit right there and make decisions; that would be more conflict of interest than what would be the situation with Brother Neal serving on CWU and his union having the negotiations with the employees of S.S.B. and the management of S.S.B.  We don’t see that as a problem. There are means and ways to work around that. So all we are saying is that, if indeed it is that, let them utilize the channels that have always been utilized.”

“What is your take, the N.T.U.C.B.’s view on the position taken by S.S.B. Do you believe it is motivated by something else, perhaps, political?”

Marvin Mora

“We are hoping it is not political. As always, there is speculation among some of the members of the N.T.U.C.B.  We want to remain as unbiased possible, to the media and the people of the country. We want to hope that it is not so and that ultimately, the Prime Minister will see through the argument of the N.T.U.C.B. and he will make the right call.”

As you may remember the S.S.B. was unable to meet last week because it didn’t meet quorum after the N.T.U.C.B. made it clear that they were not attending the meeting until Neal gets appointed.
