Authorities confirm rabies in Cayo
The Ministry of Agriculture reports an outbreak of rabies in the Cayo District. According to a press release, five cases, all in cattle, have been confirmed in two separate locations, while additional cases at a third location are now being investigated. Authorities believe that vampire bats are responsible for the outbreak and a series of measures have been initiated to prevent the spread of the deadly disease. The plan of action includes trapping of vampire bats on farms, vaccination of cattle, dogs, and other pets, and the inspection of animals at slaughterhouses. Cattle farmers especially are being asked to report any cases of animals showing lack of coordination, paralysis, inability to stand, increased nervousness and/or salivation to the nearest BAHA or Ministry of Agriculture office. Meanwhile, the general public is also being asked to report any case of unusual nervousness or behaviour in pets, livestock, or wild animals. Rabies can be spread through the saliva of infected animals and the infection can be deadly. Therefore, authorities stress that any case of human exposure must be reported immediately to the nearest health centre or hospital. Treatment is available, but must be given early to be effective.
