Boat Captain Pleads Guilty to Drug Trafficking

Miguel Dominguez

The captain of a boat belonging to Thunderbolt Water Taxi in Corozal was arraigned and he pleaded guilty to two counts of Possession of a Controlled Drug with Intent to Supply. On Thursday afternoon, thirty-five year old Miguel Dominguez, a resident of Corozal Town, was caught red-handed with four point four pounds of compressed hydro-grade marijuana. The weed was wrapped in four parcels and stuffed in a white cornflakes box. The Gang Suppression Unit of the Police Department along with the Anti-Drug Unit up north intercepted the boat before it departed to San Pedro and during a search, they discovered the drugs. News Five spoke today with Commander of the GSU, Inspector Mark Flowers about the operations.

“We had information about a vessel that was leaving, one of these water taxis were leaving Corozal en route to San Pedro and about the contents on the boat. So we conducted a search on it immediately before the boarding of passengers so that we could not have confused what passengers brought on with what in fact was on the boat already. It turned up five different packages with compressed marijuana, hydro-type. Four small packages and a bigger one and they all weighed in to about four point four pounds of compressed marijuana. These drugs when showed to the captain of the boat were readily owned up by him. He accepted that they were his and he in fact accepted responsibility for the offense committed. He was taken to court yesterday in Corozal where he pled guilty and he was fined and given time to pay. During that operation, we similarly found a number of bottles of liquors that were suspected to be contraband and they were never owned up to by anybody and so they were confiscated and will be handed over to the customs department on Monday.”

“Is he known as a drug peddler? Is information showing that he is a drug peddler?”

“I don’t know anything about his prior activities except that he was detained by virtue of intelligence, led to what was on the boat. But he was the captain and I don’t know him prior to yesterday.”

The boat was initially seized as part of the anti-drug operation, but following the guilty plea of the captain, the court ordered that the boat be returned to the owner of Thunderbolt Water Taxi.

And all he had to do was pay a fine for 4.4 lbs.? Not a bad deal. And the boat was given back. Something stinky here!
