Investigation Continues Into Corozal Robbery
On Friday, twenty-nine-year-old Mahesh Balani, a businessman of Corozal Town, was robbed at gunpoint of two hundred and forty thousand pesos, the equivalent of forty thousand Belize dollars. The incident occurred sometime before six p.m. while he was conversing with a friend outside of an adjacent building. A pair of gunmen reportedly approached Balani from behind and held him up before relieving him of the money. This morning, News Five spoke with Superintendent Andrew Ramirez who updated us on the ongoing investigation.
Supt. Andrew Ramirez, Officer Commanding, Corozal Police
“The initial information is that about six-forty-five p.m. or thereabout, an individual was on Fourth Avenue and First Street South. He had just received some monies after sales, the quantum I cannot confirm; however, whilst on the sidewalk speaking to an individual, two male persons came from the direction of south to north after which one of them placed a gun to his back and took away the bag. They fled in separate directions on foot. That investigation is still ongoing. Of course, our suspicion is that it may have some inside information because of the smoothness of how that robbery happened. We were also privileged to have gotten a recording and hence the reason we are looking at that investigation very seriously as well.”
Corozal police have made no arrests so far.
