Family of Elisa Hunter Sets Record Straight on Financial Compensation

In November 2014, Elisa Hunter was involved in a terrible traffic accident as she crossed the George Price Highway to her workplace. The government vehicle which hit her was the official ride of Minister of Foreign Affairs Wilfred Elrington, who was heading to Cabinet. She died soon after, and an investigation proved that it was not the fault of the driver, since Hunter crossed the road without warning. Still, it was tragic, since Hunter left behind one young child, and Minister Elrington promised to assist the family which faced financial difficulties. Today we got a visit from Hunter’s sister Lesby, who wasn’t running down Elrington for his promised assistance. In fact, she isn’t asking for anything but the chance to send a message, since she says that everybody believes that she’s gotten a lot of money from Elrington, and it isn’t so.

“She says that on the day her sister got knocked down, Mr. Elrington said that he was going to help her, but from the day her sister got knocked down, she hasn’t seen him from that day, and she hasn’t received anything from him. And everybody on the street is telling her that she has a lot of money because Mr. Elrington is helping her, but that’d not true. And he promised that he would help her at least to send the body to her country so that she could have been buried over there, but three months have passed and nothing.”

“I can’t even go on the street without everybody telling me that I got a lot of money, that our family received a lot of money even to take the body of my sister to Nicaragua, all of that, and that’s not true. So now I can’t even go on the street because I am ashamed and there is still much pain, especially when the baby asks me for her mother. Can you understand how that hurts? I am not here to speak against him but it’s the principle. He was the one who promised when my sister was dying. He promised, and why until now he hasn’t showed his face. We haven’t even received an apology from him.”

You know it irks me so much to read all this BS.

Now how the heck a pedestrian get hit and killed and the driver is not at least investigated?

Some day the people of Belize will get fed up with all this crap and there will be chaos in the streets.
