Shopkeeper chases gunman with machete

Story PictureA Belize City businessman is lucky to be alive tonight after narrowly dodging a gunman’s bullet. According to fifty-four year old Modesto Madrill, he was manning the counter of his Magazine Road shop around nine Monday night when a man on a bicycle rode up to him. But instead of looking into the eyes of a customer, Madrill came face to face with the business end of a thirty-eight. But as the grandfather related to us this afternoon, he was determined not to go down without a fight.

“I see wah bwai ride from that side coming down this side. I figure he will come buy, so I gone by the shop window fu serve ah, but when I get there I notice only his bike deh out deh. So I figure he di come in this side yah come buy wine. So when I come in and get by the door, I meet ah with a gun straight inna me face, roughly about twenty-four inches from my face the gun deh.

So I had the machete stuck between the door behind the chair, so all I do, I mek wah step to the machete, haul the chair a lee bit and same way I just grab the machete and swing, ketch ah on his shoulder or someway round his hand and the bullet just…I only feel the stinging, some stinging thing inna mi face and mi ears start to ring with the sound.”

“Really I noh feel no way bout it, the only thing now after several people di talk to me, my intention now da fu apply fu wah gun license cause several people advise me, why you no get wah gun, you gat yu business and sometimes, you gat some of them come and threaten me yah, but I noh take it as nothing, I take it as just blow off. Most of the guys they respect me, I have respect for them, they show me respect and everything, so I noh have no fear of them. Up to now, I still noh have no fear of them.”

Madrill was not injured in the attack. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident, but having inspected the bloody machete, police believe that the gunman is injured. A point three-eighty shell was recovered from the scene. If you have any information that may assist the police in their investigation, please contact the nearest station.
