Driver in fatal crash arrested and charged
Police investigations into a hit and run incident on the Northern Highway have resulted in charges being levied against a Corozal man. According to authorities, forty-three year old Rafael Alonzo Lanza of Libertad has been arrested and faces the offences of causing death by careless conduct, failure to report an accident, driving without due care and attention, driving without a valid driver’s license, and driving while not covered by third party insurance. It is alleged that Alonzo was the man behind the wheel of a blue Geo Prism on the afternoon of July thirtieth when it crashed near mile fifty-eight on the Northern Highway. Alonzo is said to have fled the scene, while his passenger, forty-nine year old Santiago Castillo, having been thrown from the car, was fighting for his life on the ground. Police later determined that both men were drinking and that the vehicle had been speeding at the time of the accident.
