Queen of Hills crowned in cycling
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and here comes Sports Monday. The Queens of the Hill Cycling Classic was staged Saturday and Sunday over the weekend featuring two stages on the more hilly terrain inside this beautiful jewel.
At the start of stage one of this event on Saturday, Shalini Zabaneh, Anthea Sutherland, Gina Lovell, Alicia Thompson, Gabrielle Lovell, and Marinette Flowers are the big six competitors making a bid at the Camalote start.
On the way to the turn around point at Esperanza the six remain more or less intact. But at the infamous Mt. Hope, Marinette Flowers steps out to claim that six points. And then Cross Country champion Anthea Sutherland moves up to claim the preemie at the turn around point inside Esperanza.
Still on the way back, Shalini Zabaneh mounts a solo flight at Go-Slow Hill that brings no response from the remainder of the pack and she grabs the win in this thirty-one point two mile ride, unchallenged in a time of one hour, fifty-three minutes ? more importantly, that translates into twenty-one points.
Marinette Flowers takes second place for twenty points, while Gina Lovell gets third, which equals seventeen points.
On Sunday morning, only four riders showed at Dangriga for stage two, which runs from that municipality to Belmopan ? a total of fifty miles and they?re off.
At the famous gap, Shalini Zabaneh and Gina Lovell lock horns in a head on duel that sees the Sagitun rider take the big points. Zabaneh then repeats her feat from Saturday and runs away again from the set.
And here she is completing the fifty-five mile Sunday ride in three hours fifteen minutes to again grab top honours and thus win the Queen of the Hills title 2005 edition with an overall total of one hundred and eighteen points. We say congratulations Shalini; big time show.
Gina Lovell hung on in there to take second place after totalling ninety-five points. And we?re certainly impressed with your tenacity Gina Lovell. And her sister, newcomer rider Gabrielle Lovell pulls up third today to wind up with fifty-two points. That?s good enough for third place overall. We say congratulations to the entire female cycling community and their sponsors and we do give much thanks Ramsey Cam.
Turning to the weightlifting scene, the Mr. Strongman contest over the weekend as presented by the Belize Amateur Body Building Association say Robert Hewes take top honours in the Lightweight Division, Philip McKenzie pulled up second, while Michael Buckley placed third.
At the heavyweight division, Nelson Nolberto emerged the big man, forcing Ronald Rivero into second, and Jermaine Arnold into third. We say congratulations to all.
Finally in softball news, play in the Cayo male league on Saturday saw Garden City Lions outlast Hope Creek Falcons 16-15.
Hey folks, that?s our show for today, we certainly invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
