Carlos Cassanova Jr. Charged With Corozal Murder
Mark Edward Massam was hacked to death on December ninth, 2014 on College Road in Corozal Town allegedly by Carlos Cassanova Junior who was in turn shot by police. He was immediately transferred to the K.H.M.H. in Belize City under police escort where he has been hospitalized since the incident. It was not until Tuesday, that he was released and handed over to the Belize City police and today, he was escorted to the Magistrate’s Court to be read a single charge of murder. Cassanova Junior explained that police shot him when they were trying to detain him for the murder and that the bullet shattered his flesh for which he had to undergo surgery. He said that it may take a year for him to walk again and that he has been wearing a leg brace since December 2014. According to Corozal Police, Massam and Cassanova Junior were involved in an argument which escalated into a fight. Both were believed to have been riding on separate bicycles when the violence started. Police arrived at the scene and met Cassanova Junior chopping up Massam. He was cautioned, but when he did not stop, he was shot twice. At the scene, police recovered two machetes; one is believed to be the murder weapon. Cassanova’s next court date is July fifteenth, 2015.
