Case Against Accused Grenade Murderer Wraps Up in Supreme Court

Judge Adolph Lucas summed up today the case of accused, Lusby Martinez who is on trial for the December twenty-eighth, 2009 grenade murder of Rudolph Flowers following a grenade attack in the Kraal Road area of Belize City.   After summing up, a jury stepped into the deliberating room noon to decide on the fate of Martinez and at news time the panel was still in deliberations.   The trial was prosecuted by attorney Shanice Lovelle. The main witness was to be Peter Myvette, a twenty -two year old youth of the George Street area who was violently killed in February of 2010, less than two months after the murder of Flowers. Of interest is that the crown’s main witness was a suspect and then became a witness for the crown. He gave police three statements providing details of who ordered the throwing of the grenade in the Kraal Road area. In summing up Judge Lucas told the jurors to remember that it is not a norm for statements of accomplices to be admitted into evidence against another accused. But because the statement of Myvette was important showing the sequence of events of what transpired then it was tendered into evidence. Myvette gave three statements but there were inconsistencies as to who threw the grenade. As we said, the jury is still deliberating.
