D.F.C. sues Bill Lindo for $1.8 million

Every week in the newspapers readers will see the names of dozens of Belizeans whose homes or properties are being sold at auction because they have failed to repay their loans to the Development Finance Corporation. But seldom appearing in the D.F.C. hard pay advertisements are the names of so-called “first Belizeans,” those favoured few who are better known for their party credentials than their business acumen… at least until today. According to court reports, this morning, the D.F.C., through its attorney, filed a civil suit against William “Bill” Lindo for the sum of one million, seven hundred and sixty-nine thousand, six hundred eighty-three dollars and seven cents. We understand the money was loaned to Lindo’s company, Western Development Limited, on July second 2001, for the purpose of dredging the Burdon Canal and filling over one thousand lots at mile three on the Western Highway. Lindo, who is being defended in this case by his uncle Dean Lindo, is expected to file a reply sometime this week. No trial date has yet been set for the case. Bill Lindo, aside from his dredging work, also serves as the deputy chairman of public relations for the People’s United Party. And just in case you were wondering… the D.F.C.’s attorney is none other than its former chairman, Glenn Godfrey.
