Intelligent Art Launched at the Belisle Gallery
At this time, the launch of an exhibit is ongoing at the Belisle Gallery of the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts. Entitled, Intelligent Art, it is part of the annual National Festival of Arts. The exhibition adds a new dimension to the festival of arts providing a space for youths to express their creativity in the various forms of art. Earlier today, Duane Moody got a sneak peek at the display.

The Belisle Gallery for the next two weeks will feature drawings, paintings, collages, as well as displays using recyclable materials as part of an art exhibit for the 2015 National Festival of Arts. The exhibition is looking at art with a purpose which and opens tonight for the public.

“The call went out for artists to present things from a higher level from a more deeper sense; to present something to the public that would give a message or to show some sort of thought process. And I think what we’ve received today says exactly that.”
Annually, the National Festival of Arts features dancing, singing and music. But it also incorporates art pieces from students in an exhibition at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts. This year, the exhibit will be open through to June fourteenth and is being held under the theme, “Intelligent Art.” The artwork are from persons between the ages of nine and twenty-four from across the country.

“We’ve gotten collages, a lot of stuff with recycled materials; very innovative ideas…stuff that you can use in so many ways. We would like people to come out and see it.”

“We see that there are several displays. Talk to us about those and we also understand that there are pieces from all over the country.”

“Yes, we have lots of different displays and they came from all over the country; from Placencia, Stann Creek, Corozal, Orange Walk, Toledo…everywhere. So the representation is really nice and sweet. Even just up to yesterday, I was mentioning that we had somebody just walk off the street. I guess he heard about it, didn’t know about the deadline, but his work was so good; I thought it was important to show it. You can tell that maybe his neighborhood that he is coming from is not all that great, but it would be nice to showcase what he can do.”
According to curator and artist, Rachel Heusner, the exhibit motivates the imagination of Belizean youths to think outside the box.

“The whole thing is that most people think of art as just a pretty picture that you would put on a wall so they would draw a flower or fruit. But art has been used in so many areas. Art is in design…you use it on T-shirt designs, you might design a card, you might use it on a poster, invitations, you could do cards; there are so many things. And the whole idea about this show as well is to look at things—which I think the teachers did especially with their children—was to show them that things that you would normally throw away, you could recycle them and used them in another way. And recycling is really a wonderful way to use the arts cause it helps people to…you are doing something good for the environment and you are also using your creativity to another level.”
