Another murder in Belize City

A Belize City man is dead and his killer is on the run. The victim is twenty-one year old Wasani Belgrave, a resident of Freetown Road in Belize City. According to Belgrave’s mother, Cecilia Lewis, her son had just finished working on a delivery truck and was heading home; but instead of proceeding to Freetown Road, Belgrave made a detour onto Caesar Ridge Road where he was attacked and killed around six-thirty on Thursday evening.

?The man weh he work with tell me he never gone home, he just made a U-turn back to Yabra. Because it?s very curious he said, he can?t understand why Wasani noh going home and going up that street. So he make a U-turn back to Yabra. When he looked he saw a crowd and when he get there he see Wasani on the ground.?

?Well I don?t know what is the problem, but Monday he tell me how some boys want kill him. I asked him why? He said dah old beef from we dah lee bwai. That dh weh he said.?

?The police woman who gone dah the post mortem just now tell me well noh worry, we will serve him what he deserve. She said they wah catch him. Because he ran away you know, with the handcuff on his hand he ran away. And she said he is going towards P.G., but she said they wah catch him. He is on the run right now.@

?Well I would tell him to just give up himself because you can?t want do the crime and noh want spend the time for it. The first thing you should do is think bout what will happen afterwards you do something. Or think before, it will be better, think before, I going to jail or they will hang me or something. That is what you should think first. Noh just go do a crime and run away from it. Because where he going? The police in P.G. will catch him fi true.@

A post-mortem examination conducted this afternoon certified that Belgrave’s death was due to internal bleeding caused by a stab wound to the heart. Lewis told News Five that she observed two stab wounds on her son’s body: one by the chin, and the other to the right side of his chest. Police say they had the suspected murderer in their custody, along with a brown handle knife believed to have been the murder weapon. But when an off-duty policeman, who was in the area at the time, left the scene to rush Belgrave to the K.H.M.H., the suspect–handcuffs and all–made good his escape.
