Wesley Upper holds pageant
Last week it was the Ms. Y pageant for seenagers, and this week it’s the selection of a primary school queen. Patrick Jones had the pleasure of meeting the young contestants this afternoon.
?My name is Kira Reneau. And I am the reigning Miss Wesley Upper, and it?s time to choose my successor.?
Patrick Jones, Reporting
Eight young ladies will compete in a pageant on Friday night to decide who will step into the out going queen?s shoes. It?s the second year running for the Miss Wesley competition, and the contestants say they just want to have fun and at the same time, help to raise much needed money for their school.
Shamika Higinio, Standard 4
?I?m just taking part in this pageant to have fun and show Belizeans that we are beautiful girls and we just want to participate.?
Kelsey Gillett, Standard 4
?I am coming out of standard six this year and I just wanted to have a little fun before leaving because high school and onwards you have to really work hard. So just leaving, just want to have my final time.?
The competition will feature different segments, including formal wear and talent.
Kelsey Gillett
?Well I will be dancing, which I love to do. So that will be real good. Also I will be doing some things to just enjoy myself. I will be expressing myself in a poem for my talent. I will also be doing curtsies, which you really have to practice and just be myself up there, have fun and calm down.?
Patrick Jones
?What is it like being among the other girls, you are competing against? What is it like for this group??
Kelsey Gillett
?Well we are all friends, so we just help out each other. When they need a pointer for the introductory dance, we just help them out with each other. I?m not the oldest, but we just help out each other you know, from youngest help out the oldest, the oldest help out the younger, and we just really work together as friends.?
And while they lean on each other for support leading up to the pageant, only one of these girls will walk away from the Parish Hall on Friday night with the crown. Gillett says all they want is for the public to come see they perform and at the same time support the school.
Kelsey Gillett
?Because it?s really entertaining and it?s fun. I was there last year and I really enjoyed myself.?
Patrick Jones
?Who should come to the pageant to come see you??
Kelsey Gillett
?Who should come? Everyone who likes entertainment and who will enjoy themselves, and mainly people from the school and just to help out and participate in the fundraising.?
Patrick Jones, for News Five.
The pageant takes place at six-thirty on Friday evening at the Holy Redeemer Parish Hall in Belize City. Tickets are five dollars for adults, three for children.
