Single Mother Charged with Drug Trafficking

Virginia Ellis

Tonight a single mother of three is facing court fines of ten thousand dollars which she must pay by November of this year or serve three years prison time. Thirty-five year old Virginia Ellis, of Neal’s Pen Road Extension, Belize City, was busted inside her home where three hundred and seventy-two grams of cannabis were found. She was charged with a single count of Drug Trafficking with Intent to Supply to Another Person or Persons for the Purpose of Drug Trafficking.   Ellis’ trial concluded before Magistrate Ladonna John on Wednesday and she was found guilty and ordered to pay the ten thousand dollar fine as a first time offender.  On August twenty-ninth, 2014, officers of the GSU, Marvin McKoy and Mark Martinez, executed a search warrant at Ellis’ house. Inside her living room, they found three bags with the cannabis inside a container. In her defence, Ellis told the court that the weed must have been brought to her home by her brother-in-law who she alleged is a drug dealer. She also claimed she had given her sister and her boyfriend permission to stay at her home for a period of time. And that is was after they left that the police found weed inside her home.  She also claimed she had no knowledge of the weed found inside her house.
