U.K. donates to O.A.S. border fund
The British Government has announced today its plans to contribute almost a million Belize dollars to the O.A.S. Peace Fund. That fund was established by the Organization of American States as a means of pooling the financial resources of the international community in order to implement projects along the border between Belize and Guatemala. This afternoon at the O.A.S. border office, British High Commissioner Alan Jones and O.A.S. Border Office Director Miguel Trinidad formally agreed to the transfer of funds. The donation totals two hundred and fifty thousand pounds or approximately nine hundred and fifty-four thousand Belize dollars. This is the sixth such contribution the United Kingdom has made to the Fund. According to a release from the British High Commission in Belmopan, the money will be used to finance confidence-building projects along the Belize-Guatemala frontier. While the projects are not designed to solve the problem of the Guatemalan claim, they are being implemented to foster at least some measure of harmony and trust among residents on both sides of the border.
