Are Belize’s Borders Demarcated?

Wilfred Elrington

But Guatemala is claiming fifty percent of the country, and border incidents such as the one involving the Forward Operating Base in the Sarstoon often inflame emotions on this side. At the forum, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, said that there is need for the International Court of Justice to demarcate the borders of Belize.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“So basically as far as I understand we need to go to the ICJ because that is a precondition for us to be able to demarcate our terrestrial boundary, our land boundary as well as our sea boundary because at the present time we are a nation without defined or demarcated boundaries. That has to be done, same thing in Israel and other parts of the world. The issue really at this point in time, the only issue remaining as far as I see it, is for us to get a pronouncement on our boundaries. And the question that we are going to the ICJ to get resolved, the way that it was framed, is essentially is to deal with this issue of the boundary, whether it is valid or not, that is essentially the issue at its core. But the formulation of the question, and it was not formulated by my administration, I think it was formulated by the previous administration, but it was formulated by us, but it was by our legal advisors whom we inherited from our last administration. We have perhaps one of the best and foremost set of international lawyers to advise us and we don’t do anything without consulting them. So Fred Martinez is back and forth from Guatemala to Europe, to France, to London, Alexis was there too, myself, I went to see the chief attorney. So basically, the formulation, the wording of the question was formulated by our lawyers, lawyers whom we inherited from the last administration. When this matter goes to the ICJ I won’t be, we have expert lawyers and the truth is that we will be using the same team of lawyers. All the administrations that have come into Belize have used the same team of lawyers. Every single Belizean Foreign Minister have said publicly, privately, have written papers saying that the only way to solve this problem is by going to the ICJ. So we don’t have an option.”

“We are a nation without defined or demarcated boundaries” – ??? Where did our boundaries go? Were they erased quietly without our knowledge?

Please, Mr. Elrington, choose words that are true and sensible.

Can somebody give this man an atlas or a punch. What he means by “without defined boundaries? Is he Belizean? This government is misleading us and selling our country. We are an independent nation and recognize internationally. It seems that our foreign minister doesn’t know or don’t wants to know the facts. I wonder how much money he is pocketing. They will be the first to fall if something was to happen in the jewel.

This is just like the American that killed the lion in zimbawe. He paid and did legally. Guatemala is doing the same thing, paying and legally. How much does a country cost, Fraud Erlingtongue?

On a separate note, Belize city is in a mess due to is inept leading ministers. Open your eyes, because they are trying to put you asleep and rape you.

    Bombooooclat.

This man is better off when he doesn’t open his mouth. Mr Barrow should start considering removing this man from this portfolio. He is NOT Belizean for true.
