Eastern Division Receives Donation of Surveillance Equipment

The Eastern Division of the Police Department is the recipient of some much needed donation of surveillance equipment and other items to assist with intelligence-led policing methods. The donation, valued at twenty thousand Belize dollars, is being made by the United States Embassy through the Central America Regional Security Initiative, better known as CARSI. According to Senior Superintendent Chester Williams, intelligence-led policing when coupled with its community policing efforts will be the best framework to assist with the department’s fight against urban crime.

“In addition to our community policing efforts, we are the recipient today of a very handsome donation from the United States Embassy, the CARSI Program where we are receiving equipments for our analysis room. So, effective next week, we will have established a crime analysis pattern unit within the Eastern Division South and we hope to extend the work that is being done in that office to Eastern Division North. We will be looking at intelligence-led policing. So while we continue to work with people who want to work with us, we’ll continue to give them that leverage to live a peaceful life and those who wish to continue live the criminal life, we will pursue them methodically, through the intelligence process, so that will prevent us from going at people randomly, but rather to police more from an intelligence perspective. The donation I believe values over twenty thousand Belize dollars and that includes desk, computers, TV monitors, maps, printers, cameras and the purpose of the unit is to look at the intelligence aspect of our work. We do have the SIM and COMSTAT which does its own analysis. But the analysis that is being done by SIM and COMSTAT is not an indebt analysis. So what we are doing now, to compliment what we are getting, we are now using the human aspect of intelligence to go more deeper into the intelligence gathering process and we believe that by doing that, we will be able to deploy our human resources more effectively and most importantly, we will be able to target people from an intelligence perspective.”
