Hubert Elrington Says Petrocaribe Going Soon
Appearing on the Dickie Bradley Special on Monday, Hubert Elrington, a former U.D.P. Minister, blasted the government, claiming that there is absolutely nothing to cheer about under this administration. Not only that, but he cautions that when Petrocaribe goes away, and it will, then reality will set in.
Hubert Elrington, Former U.D.P. Minister
“The country has no direction. We don’t know where the hell we’re going. I have never been so pessimistic. I don’t know where we’re going. We seem to be a ship without a rudder. You understand? Show me what it is we’re producing, what we’re using our brain to do? What we’re using our technologies to do. Sending a child to university, graduating the child summa cum laude and then have the child at home sitting for the next seven years – can’t get a job – does that sound like Belize? Yes it sounds like Belize because it is an asinine country. What would you celebrate…? Tell me what is there to celebrate? You tell me. Point out something. The next thing you might hear from Venezuela is that the price of oil has fallen so low that you might have to stop the Petrocaribe, so it won’t roll again. Then we’ll be in some real trouble.”
Belize “is an asinine country,” says Elrington. Most Belizeans don’t want to hear this but the man is bloody right! We need to examine why it is that our country is so “asinine”. We have a false idea of patriotism. One cannot love land, water and oil more than his fellow man. The British instilled in us a false sense of patriotism – a love of our British heritage and a senseless hatred towards our Spanish speaking neighbors. To this day many Belizeans still refer to Mexicans and Guatemalans as “Spanish” and it is often underscored with a sense of derogation. Yet in terms of development, Belize is quite backwards compared to our two neighbors. Chetumal for the weekend anyone?
